Getting Started Guide
What Makes Mewgenics Special
Mewgenics combines tactical roguelike combat with a deep breeding meta-game. Each cat goes on exactly one adventure before retiring - meaning power progression happens through breeding better cats, not grinding the same ones. Think Darkest Dungeon meets complex genetics.
Game Status
Mewgenics is currently in development by Edmund McMillen (The Binding of Isaac) and Tyler Glaiel. Scheduled for release February 10, 2026 on Steam. This guide is built from preview footage and developer interviews to help you prepare for launch.
The Core Loop
Home: Breeding & Management
Between runs, manage your house full of cats. Compatible cats will breed overnight, creating kittens that inherit traits and abilities. Decorate rooms, manage relationships, and plan your next generation.
Adventure: Tactical Combat
Take a team of cats on dungeon runs. Each cat can only adventure once before retiring. Combat is turn-based and tactical - position matters, mana management is crucial, and abilities interact in complex ways.
Long-term Progression
Success comes from breeding stronger cats over time. Traits carry forward, mutations occur, and you'll gradually build bloodlines capable of deeper runs. The developers estimate 200+ hours to beat the final boss.
Class System
Cats wear colored collars that determine their class:
- Red Fighter - Close combat specialist
- Green Hunter - Ranged damage dealer
- Additional classes include mages, tanks, clerics, and necromancers, each with unique abilities and tactical roles.
Key Tips
- Every cat only gets one adventure - make it count
- Combat rewards tactical thinking over quick reflexes
- Breeding is the real progression system
- Items and abilities interact in surprising ways - experiment!
